I haven’t written an article about training for a long time, at least more than fifteen years.
Since retiring from semi-professional running in 2013, I have started to work in the community and promote ultra-marathon, marathon and other sports. I have gradually reduced my own training and spent more time helping runners experience road running. The Atacama event is a very lucky event in my life. I won the championship in 2004. The equipment we used at that time was not like today. The progress of the times has also given runners more advantages in diet, nutrition and equipment. For example : The weight of electrolytic powder can vary several times, which can reduce a lot of weight during at least seven days of running. The weight of backpacks, shoes, and clothing to keep warm and wick away sweat is also very different from what it was 20 years ago.
The year before last, I led some Taiwanese friends to participate in the Atacama race. During the race, I was responsible for leading two runners. They were all competing in the desert for the first time. We were like a train. I used 80% of their physical pace every day. During the race, I would fly solo only in the last 5 kilometers or so. This strategy really made the two runners feel the same.
Therefore, pace will be the most important issue for all players in this challenge.
I am participating as an Official Team this time, and the other two runners also ran within three hours of last year’s marathon. I believe that as long as we are well prepared, we will be able to successfully complete the race. See you there, friends.
