Orkhon Valley: A Journey Through Time
The Orkhon Valley, located in central Mongolia, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rich history and stunning natural beauty. Spanning over 121,967 hectares, this valley has been a cultural and historical hub for centuries.
Natural Beauty
Nestled between the Khangai Mountains and the vast steppes, the Orkhon Valley is a picturesque landscape where rivers meander through lush meadows. The valley is home to diverse wildlife, including rare birds like the bar-headed geese and whooper swans.
Historical Significance
The Orkhon Valley has been the seat of ancient Mongolian empires, including the Xiongnu, Göktürks, and Uighurs. It was also the site of Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire founded by Genghis Khan in 1220. The valley's historical significance is evident in its numerous archaeological sites, such as the ruins of Karakorum and the Erdene Zuu Monastery. In addition, Gobi March participants will spend one night in Orkhon Valley.
Cultural Heritage along the Ancient Silk Road
The valley has been a crossroads of cultures, where East met West along the Silk Road. This intersection influenced art, religion, and trade, leaving a rich cultural mosaic. Nomadic traditions, with horses as steadfast companions, remain an integral part of the valley's cultural tapestry.

Visitors to the Orkhon Valley can explore various historical sites, including:
- Karakorum City Ruins: The remnants of the ancient Mongol capital.
- Erdene Zuu Monastery: The first Buddhist monastery established in Mongolia. (Gobi March finish line)
- Orkhon Waterfall: A stunning natural attraction. Tuvkhun Hermitage Monastery: A serene retreat offering breathtaking views.
Participants in the Gobi March will experience several of these attractions.
Climate
The Orkhon Valley experiences long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The coldest month is January, with temperatures ranging from -15 to -20°C, while the warmest month is July, with temperatures around 20 to 25°C.
