Hey Guys

Finished the long stage last night before midnight, had a good start to the day and was running well, then some Bedouin kids hid some of the markers so got lost and ran a couple extra Km, until got back on track, had a little rant and videoed it on my phone as the midday heat was messing with me a bit. Have been placed around 74th going into the long day then ended up coming in around 45th last night, just seem to be getting better as the days went on, running freer although I can hardly walk today. Had to run the last 20k in the dark if you could call it running by then as the terrain was really hard and the sun had been really hot all day so was pretty messed up. One stage at the 40k mark was just up for over 10k it broke a few people and there were a few withdraws. Some people have got some messed up feet blistered as, I’m all good not one blister and still walking around camp barefoot it freaks out the medical team. Tomorrow is an untimed stage to the finish about 10k I think so will bust out the Kiwi flag and take it easy, rest day at the moment for me some other competitors are still coming in, 13 hours later, now that’s hard core. We all just sitting around dreaming of food and beer as pretty low on kai. So have pretty much knocked this one off, only 3 more to go this year, next one in 3 month time in the Gobi, China, someone should volunteer for support crew and come along. Will see you all in a week a few Kg’s lighter

Keep Safe Inia

Hi Guys

Another tough day today but finished, yah! Didn’t think I could run roughly a marathon a day for 4 days running and still feel human. Got the long stage tomorrow 86k ! At the moment running about 40k in 6 hours or more so It’s gonna be a long day at the office and it gets really cold at night so won’t be keen to stop too long at the aid stations. Have learn’t so much for the next race and will be making some serious gear and likely shoe changes, heaps of people are wearing those Hoka One shoes and I can see why with how bruised your feet get. Stomach holding in OK at present heaps of people getting upset from all the gels, I’ve run out of chews but luckily got heaps of electrolyte satchets let for tomorrow. As I’ve said before if I start a day I’ll finish it no matter what so it’s all go for tomorrow. Today was a struggle as the temperature finally hit desert levels and we all suffered, got some really cool tan lines too. Some of the support team have learn’t my name as the only kiwi bloke here so that’s quite cool, or maybe it’s because I keep on walking around in bare feet after the race (island styles bro) I tell them it’s why I got no blisters yet. Had to add an extra 10 minutes to my time today due to a shit break which came on all of a sudden so would have been a few places better if hadn’t but when you gotta go you gotta go, hope everyone at home is good

Stay safe Inia

Had a good day today ran a lot better, felt stronger this morning and changed tactics trying to get as many Ks done before the sun hit full force worked alright ended up finishing about an hour faster than yesterday. Feet are holding up well, no blisters yet but may lose a toe nail soon. Another 40k day tomorrow before the long stage, feeling nervous about the long day as it gets really cold at night here any will probably end up running in all my gear just to try and stay warm. Plan for next time is a bigger pack and more food am hungry as and chomping through all my kai. Cheers mum and dad for the messages am alive and well. Had my first heat induced food dream today and really would love some burger fuel and an icecream. Achilles is a little better today or maybe I just can’t feel the pain anymore. Its hard to belive but there has been some people pulled up for cheating and cutting corners off the course, can’t see the point I’m running 250k. Hope everyone is well at home

Stay safe Inia

Hi Inia, just heard from your mum today that you're out there in the desert running up a storm, so have gotten into your blogs to see how it's going ... man you are SO keen!!! Hope the long day's run went okay for you and you don't do yourself any further injury. Sorry we missed you last time we called in to Urenui - you'd been at Haam's and were suffering in bed. All the best for successful completion - we'll keep ourselves posted looking at the site. Love, Sue and Stan

Hi Guys

First blog, couldn’t write one last night as it was raining all day and freezing, in the desert! Tent got soaked through first night as they were Bedowin tents made out of wool that leaked, ran first day in wet gear and spent the end of the first days race in the medical tent with mild hypothermia, not what you expect in a desert ultra. Then it rained again that night and onto my sleeping bag so had a cold night, lucky today was so hot that everything dried out, talk about extremes. First days running started really well then as expected my Achilles flared up and the last 10k was really slow. Today was really sore initially then losened up  a bit  but still quite painful and tight that is really slowing me down may be for the best as one chick from NZ ruptured hers today which means only 2 kiwis left. At least each day my pack should be getting lighter although it doesn’t feel like it, today was soo hot when I was running at midday. Just our luck we have a guy in the tent that snores like a train and can sleep through anything. Day 3 tomorrow just gonna try and survive, cheers for all the support

Have strained my left Achilles and have not been allowed to run since New Years not what you want a month out from your first multiday race. Fitness is going out the window and will struggle to be injury free prior to race day, pretty bummed out, it just means I may be walking more than running in this first race of the series. Not a happy runner

12 December 2013 07:19 am (GMT+12:00) Auckland, Wellington

Have made the all important shoe decision and am going for what I know which is the Salomon Speedcross 3 half a size bigger than what I run in at home. Also thinking of taking a light spare pair of shoes in case of a mishap and to wear after each days running. Will be sticking to the tried and true icebreaker socks as they work well, the marino breathes well and won't stink after 7 days. Will also be sticking to marino shorts and short sleeved top 150-200 weight again as breath well less stinky and hopefully will keep me cool during the day and warm at night. Will take a full set of compression longs and top for recovery or race running in if necessary. Haven't figured out how I'm gonna attach the patches to the compression top yet.

hey there Inia, I am happy to help with any queries you have, you can email me @ [email protected]. I have done 3 of the series and cant wait for the last one, always happy to help someone who is venturing out into the fantastic world of racing the planet

Hi again Inia - Great news that you have found your shoes. It sounds like a good choice. For your patches, we have mailed the 4 Deserts patches to you in the mail. You can sew these onto your shirts or iron them on (though this oftentimes doesn't work and the patches come off before the end of the race week). You also have the option of identifying someone to silkscreen the 4 Deserts and nationality logos onto your shirts. This may be a good option for you. Best of luck! Alina

Have found my login code so can start again, posted a reply to last comments under comments section as was having technical difficulties. If anyone has some good gear especially shoe tips give me a bell, just remember to leave a reply address or email. Don't know if I'm gonna go compression short or just normal running shorts like what I'm used to any ideas? Also I typically run in a fairly minimalist shoe and I' betting thats probably not a good idea? I have got some gaiters for them, does everyone typically train in a larger than normal pair of shoes and wear 2 pairs of socks at home then drop a pair as you feet swelling in the heat?

Cheers for that Alina, have narrowed my shoe choice down to 2 Nike Kieger's that I like running in as light and fully cushioned and the Salomon speedcross that I have done a few Ultras in here in NZ, the Salomon's are OK but took a bit of breaking in as quite a narrow fit to start with, will definitely have to go a half size up, they also can be quite hard on the forefoot if the trail is hard packed as not much in the way of forefoot cushioning but at least they quite a rugged shoe. The Nike are Ultra comfortable but I don't know if they will hold up to the conditions

Bit new to this blog thing and I don't know what people will find interesting or helpful. Current training is not going too bad, have had a year off from injury and have so far managed to stay reasonably injury free, due to taking it slow for once and doing a lot of rehab. The main problem seems to be fitting it all in with shift work. Got back into running start of this year and to date have done mainly off road runs in NZ, which typically means trails, 6-12k night run series and 20-23k xterra trail series. Got my first Ultra for the year at the end of this month, a return to "The Great Naesby Water Race" but will only be doing the 50k rather than the 100k. Typical weeks training at the moment consists of -CrossFit x4 -Long run ~20k+ building up gradually off road -Tempo or shorter run 6-12k -Short recovery run or repeats -Physio or Rehab once a week Am currently working on running form and strength/rehab as I find thats what works best for me, will be increasing amount and distance of runs per week gradually, most likely by running to and from work. Will be interested to see what people are choosing gear wise as this is all new to me. I have no idea about shoes for running in the desert and sizing, so will be keen to see what others are doing Cheers

Hi haven't written anything in ages, last email address was hacked and still getting to grips with trying to login. injuries are almost sorted, probably trashed myself a little bit too hard in some of the warm up events back home, it's hard not to get carried away and not enter every run that comes along, some of the ultras really hammer you recovery wise. Think I'm getting the hang of training, still struggling with shoes, will probably buy a pair larger than normally wear and wear a couple pairs of socks while training at home to break them in. I guess the problem is I like fairly light weight neutral shoes and I don't know if they will handle the desert. I also have seemed to have lost my blog login code, doh! (I' a bit techno phobic) anyway thanks for the comments you guys can email me at [email protected] or better yet send me a facebook friend request cheer Inia
