153 miles in the can. 56 miles yesterday. 3.5 miles to go to the finish line at Petra, 2 very smelly, very torn up, very ecstatic (we’re hugging a lot) American runners, exactly zero baby wipes left, and from the sounds of it, over 43000 dollars raised so far for the cause we came here for.

It’s been A pretty Unbelievable 24 hours.

We started out yesterday by dropping several hundred feet into a canyon straight out of Indiana Jones. And then we stayed there for about a marathon.  Gnarly.  The kind of slot canyon where you can reach out and touch both sides with your hands sometimes.  The type of place you wouldn’t want to be when the rain comes.  And the kind of place that even the volunteers had camel in water for the checkpoints (yep. Camel is a verb here) Of the 185 runners, the canyon did it in for several, who have been nursing heat or foot injuries all week and just couldn’t keep going. Then, we climbed over 2100 feet to the ridge that would lead us to Petra.  By the time we reached the top, the sun had gown down, and we lumbered into Checkpoint 5 in pretty bad shape. One guy we came into 5  with had a seizure shortly after we left (we stay at each checkpoint long enough to fill our water bottles) and limped into the finish line with one of the doctors this morning at 1130, a full 26 hours after he’d started. By stage 6, we’d been running for almost 12 hours, and spent the next 5 moving  across the side of the Jordanian mountains in weather one might describe as Biblical. I had been running with a 40 something Filipino from my tent named Arthur who cant be more than 150 pounds.  We had to keep checking to make sure he hadn’t been blown clear off the mountain. I sprained my left ankle (I’ve got a serious cankle) someplace between between CP 6 and 7, and the last 18 miles were pretty gruelling.  We hit the outskirts of the village of Petra at about midnight, ran 4 miles through the streets, and then finished the night with a rock field straight down the mountain to the entrance of Petra canyon, crossing the stage 5 finish line with a lot of tears and more than a few swear words at 1:35AM. I checked into checkpoint 1 at 100, and finished the day 69th, which is where Chris and I have been sitting all week.  Chris had a monster day. The Ironman finished the day 38th, and even though we didn’t get the chance to race together yesterday, we had a quick handshake and a hug before we collapsed in the tent and passed out until just a little bit ago.  I’m proud of him. He said of all the races he’s done, yesterday’s course was the hardest he’d ever seen.

This is my first long race, but it won’t be my last (sorry Mom) and I can see, despite the ridiculous pain and dirt and emotions, why they are so addicting.  In addition to the incredible people you meet from all over the globe who have done too many amazing things to count (this race has an Olympian, North and South Pole reachers, and Everest marathoners) it’s the 56 mile days that stretch your body and your spirit in a way unlike anything else I have ever done.  It’s touching a limit that reminds you that we can push ourselves further than we ever thought possible, and that absolutely nothing is impossible together.  It’s reaching the top of a mountain after a 2 hour climb with new friends utterly exhausted with another 7 hours to go, looking west across the holy land as the sun sets in the desert, imagining home and Haiti thousands of miles after that and feeling that, despite the distance, you’ve never felt closer to both.

When I train in Haiti, everybody always yells after me “Who are you running from?!”.  Until tonight and this week and your incredible comments, vibes, and donations, I’ve never had an answer.  But when I get back to Port-au-Prince to put the hard earned dollars of every one of our donors to work, now I know what I’ll say.

I’m not running from anybody.

I’m running to you.

Hey Ian, I know im very very late but hey better late than never right? Being a former runner, I can almost comprehend how grueling this must be on your body. The amount of respect I have for you to compete in this race let alone finish is out of this world. It is truly a blessing to look up to a cousin with such determination and with such a good heart. IAN,,I have been following your blog since the beginning of this tremendous, inspiring awesome adventure of yours. First of all , I would like to say you are undoubtedly the bravest person I have ever met. Seriously,the bravest person I have ever,ever met.The things you have accomplished, the lives you have changed, the people you have inspired are far beyond measure. I have been home in Pa this week and spending time with your Aunt Janet and I can tell you the pride and joy you bring to your family is tremendous. We have read your blog over and over and each time we have cried. I cannot imagine the pride your parents must feel right now. I could go on and on and on but I dont want to sound like a groupie even though in my eyes you are quite the "Rock Star". Let me just say 'You make everyone who has ever known you want to do better, be better, give more and help those less fortunate. You show all of us that "One person can make a difference" You are making a gigantic difference.I am definitely coming to Haiti in the very near future with Janet.I hope you are celebrating your emnormous victory and taking some time to rest!!!!

Like your mom, $48k in! We're so close and I assure you that we'll make our goal. You're doing an amazing job out there. Bandage up that ankle and be safe getting through the last 3 miles. I just knew you could do it. And as of 5 minutes ago, we are over $48,000! It was remarkable to see the generosity and support coming from so many. Not to mention the bonds that were formed and reinforced from all involved. I am so proud of you for not just covering the miles but for the vision of what you could do for team Tassy by doing this. You are, however, in for a tongue lashing from your Aunt Janet so be ready for that. I can't wait to share with you all the posts, emails, texts and more between all the women in your life. Well, not all the posts. I may or may not have told some people, just a couple, how you feel about the dark. Jenna, Viv, Kahla, Aunt Janet, Raashi and I were never more than 3 feet and 5 minutes from any device that could give us any morsel of an update. Not to mention dad glued to the ipad. Tonight I was just about to get in the shower when he YELLED, "RESULTS"! And the speculation of what we thought must surely be going on and why there haven't been updates. Jenna is prepared, and probably already drafted the proposal, to tell the race organizers that they should have hired one more social media intern to handle the volume. Up until now, when people met you for the first time, they would look way up and ask, 'how tall ARE you?' Now, I suspect, they'll look down and ask, "does it hurt when they drill holes in your toes?" And, no need for a formal introductions between us and Raashi. We've met. :) the family is gathering next Sunday. We have a nice weekend planned for you and Raashi. Not to mention the follow up event your father is planning to continue your fundraising efforts. Yah. That'll teach you to run off. So glad you got to be Indiana Jones, Lawrence of Arabia, Wiley Coyote and The Road Runner all in one week. Did you see the Road Runner while you were out there?! Love you! Mom

I just got stretched by a small Chinese man, I’m the last guy in the cyber tent, and Chris just told me I run like Sasquatch. You’ll note by the tone in his post tonight that he is a mean soul.  I’m doing all I can with the kid, but he doesn’t like old people and he hates puppies.  What am I supposed to do with that?

In truth, he’s the reason I’m going to make it through this.  I am sure there are people that are sick of us, because all we do is laugh like school girls.

We wake up tomorrow and run 56 miles.  I don’t like driving 56 miles.  But ill get up at 6, powder my feet and change the tape on my toes, put my pack on, dip Chris in his usual full body sunscreen bath (the kid gets sunburn under his socks), and put one Bigfoot in front of the other for 16-18 hours and get this thing done.  Everybody seems nervous tonight.  The folks who’ve done it before say to take it slow, keep eating, and when the sun goes down put as many clothes on as you can and don’t stop. They give us the option of stopping for few hours to sleep, but really, everybody just wants to get it over with. Then, its off day, and 5k home to the finish line.

Since we’ll be running tomorrow night, we wont post, but if you have a spare good vibe, anytime between 1am and 10pm EST we’ll be moving, so feel free to send it our way.  I think we’re both nervous, but there isn’t any doubt in each of our minds, we’ll make it tomorrow if we have to crawl.

Thanks for all the blog comments. HUGE for us in the tough moments and even bigger for tomorrow. They mean a lot. Viv, tell Verline, Carmitha, and Marc Noel that theyre awesome, and we’ll tell them all about it in a few weeks in Haiti. To family and friends, youre all effing great.

Ian, I slept last night for the first time this week. You know how I get when you're doing something like this. The only way I could do that was holding onto the thought that you were safe in camp and doing the same. It's a mother thing. But you! You walk for those who have no path, you speak for those who have no voice and you do to give them a better life. Remember when you were working in NYC and came home for a visit. You were so unhappy and said, mom there has to be more to life than this. Well I think you found it. I am so proud of you for answering Gods call. Can't wait to hear about this journey!

You are going to get this when you are done sadly, but I really wanted you to know that I have been thinking of you and what you are doing. (or if you don't have access then you'll have finished by time you read this) Of course it will be a tough 3.1 after everything you've been through, but relatively speaking that's a walk in the park compared to the significance of your previous accomplishments. Keep fighting through and enjoy your victory lap to the finish line! It such an amazing accomplishment and as we all keep saying again and again it's inspiring beyond belief! Me again. So, Chris says you've been stealing his jokes. He also said something about catching a scorpion so um, I hope you're still able to run with holes in your toes. Your mom pointed out that I had posted on the old Facebook that you got holes drilled into your shoes, not feet so I had to issue a NY Times style correction. I think subconsciously I refused to read that part correctly. However, it takes more than a few holes and lost toenails to stop Ian Rosenberger. You, my friend, are unstoppable. By the time you read this, you'll have made it through probably the most physically difficult day of your life. So proud of you, buddy. Can't wait to hear all about it.

It's been 7 days since you left, but it feels like much longer. so excited for all that you've accomplished already. Keep pushing, you're so close now. Can't imagine how you're gonna feel after the Long March, but hopefully the terrible is balanced by the weight of the accomplishment (especially considering all this good karma you've built up over the years and the past 7 days). Ian, remember why you started in the first place! You're an inspiration and I'm honored to be AU! Don't give up until you're miles past the finish line. The distance is great but your motivation and drive is greater! You began this journey for a reason and you won't stop until you've far surpassed your goals. IAN. I'm wildly impressed. I ran my first marathon in October and have such appreciation for the focus, drive and selfless heart you have to take on such a physically demanding task. But here's the thing - you got this. Believe and keep putting one step in front of the other. You can do this. Ian, reading your blog shows me why you & Chris have become such great friends & why he's been telling us all along how much he respects & admires you. I cant tell you how much the blog comments mean to us.  We’re three marathons in, I’ve lost 4 toenails, and I can’t get Chris to put any clothes on. I think Chris has figured out how to respond to comments, but I’m generally pretty delirious by the end of the day and cant figure it out, so sorry I havent been able to say anything back. It really does buoy our spirits though, and we’ve got some big days ahead, so thank you.

Just kidding about the Chris part by the way. The toenail thing is real though. The docs had to drill holes into my toes to let out the pressure.  Gross, right?  Looks like it might not be a flip flop summer.

All in all a good day. Chris and I haven’t been running together now for two days.  We have different strides, so he tends to smoke me on the downhills and I do a bit better on the uphills, so we generally play a big game of leapfrog all day.  Highlights, other than the general good looks and charisma of my running partner:

The scenery is still incredible.  We’re out of the Wadi Rum desert now, and today passed through a two mile salt flat with, wait for it, a camel racing track.  I was about 5 minutes behind a guy who actually watched a camel being born, which is just absurd, because all this time Chris and I were convinced that they were all audioanimatromic robots. Theyre everywhere. Baby camels are obscenely cute, even if I only had a few seconds to catch a glimpse.

Camp is awesome.  Our tent is full of great folks, all of whom have done races like this before.  Its pretty humbling to be the rookies.  A lot of these folks have run over 150 miles in places like Antarctica, the north pole, and Mt.Everest. One of our tent mates tore her Achilles heel yesterday after being one of the top females, which crushed all of us.  Its incredible how our spirits rise and fall together.  It really is one of the best parts of the experience.  After each day, we cross the finish line, we all collapse out side the tent and talk through the day together. The tents are all bedouin style and sleep maybe 25 folks, separated into groups of 8 each, so we get some time together. Naturlly chris and I spend  good deal of time being giant pains in the ass, which, as the only Americans seems to fit the bill.

One more marathon tomorrow, then, it’s the big day, which everybody seems to be nervous about.  We did the math today, and figured that is we keep up our same pace and starting at the normal 8am, we should get in shortly after 2 am on Friday morning.  In addition to being the longest stage, its also the most difficult, so we’ve got that going for us. Over 2000 feet of vertical climb and 56 miles.  Chris and I will take turns carrying each other.

Apologies for the grammar and spelling, if you saw where I was typing from youd understand.  Tiny tablet (big fingers) in a Bedouin tent, with sand for a floor, next to guy who smells not unlike and Brazilian Chris Murrer after 68 miles and no shower.

Keep raising that money, and please tell friends and family to not be afraid to comment. Even though I cant respond to them, they get us through.

Really proud of you. When you are feeling isolated consider this fun fact: the horizon line you see is about 3.1 miles away based on your height and the curvature of the earth. So every 3.1 miles you'll be experiencing a brand new horizon you haven't seen before. As you run up a mountain to about 2,000 feet the horizon will grow to be about 50 miles away. Vibrams are really in right now so you're covered there. Viv and I will set up a meeting with them about corporate sponsorship. Just keep going!

Judy just recently told the newest class, Spring 14 All These Layers, your incredible story along with your involvement at Penn State. It's amazing to see that the PN flame hasn't lost it's spark, and is making big waves across the globe. Ian- the Deeplocal team is so proud of you; I forward Viv's recaps around the office and everyone here is astonished with what you've been able to accomplish. We're also impressed that you're able to write great blog posts after hundreds of miles of running across the desert. Ian! Holy shit dude! (Can I say that in the comments? Looks like you've got some family on here or something. OK, I take it back . . .) Holy crap dude! You're running through the deserts. Like, all of the deserts. (I'm assuming you know that already . . . more simply to express my own astonishment, but who knows, I'd probably be delirious at this point if I were you, so maybe you need a reminder.) I remember when I danced in THON. Somewhere around hour 38 or something I got really whacked out and convinced that I was traveling to an alternate THON universe every time I blinked my eyes because I was losing track of people I knew. So I started making friends with strangers and hugging a lot of people. I think I was also grinning like an idiot. So I can't really imagine where you are at right now, physically, mentally, olfactorily. But I'm willing to wager you're having a hell of a time, all things considered. Maybe not hugging people, cause I mean, come on, seems like you're not showering a lot, but no judgments, you are in a desert (all of the deserts?) after all. But what you are doing is genuinely awesome. So keep on running. And when the going gets tough, remember that if you were back in Pennsylvania, you'd just be shoveling forty feet of snow. I'd probably let someone drill a hole in my toenail if it meant I could stop shoveling for the season. I'm trivializing, so don't take me too seriously (because clearly this comment deserved it up to here?). But look, you're an inspiration. Go punch a desert in its sandy face with your battered feet. IAN! We're over $40,000! I think we have the race organizers and the website to thank for that as well as the donors. It makes it real for us here. They do a good job of updating us throughout the day. And the photos! So amazing. We get a taste of what it must be like for you guys. I have the page up all day at work and check it constantly for news and results. As does dad. Everyone in our offices is following along as they are everywhere. I especially love the well wishes Viv posts from your Haitian brothers and sisters. So heartfelt and sincere. News from home: The thaw has started. In the 40s today. Funny how we are all dreaming of sun and sand and you...well...anyhow. Still so much snow on the ground. Ian, remember the day you called me and said, "Mom. I met this kid in Haiti and he asked me for help. What should I do." And I said you should do what you can and God will do what you can't. That was almost 3 years ago to the day. And so much you and God have done together. Tassy has gone from a very sick stranger in the back of a pick up truck to a healthy member of our family. I thought the first race photo on the website of you in the back of that truck was pretty symbolic since that's how it all began. Because of your vision, determination, stubbornness and passion, Team Tassy is changing lives! And because of generous friends, family and their friends and family, Team Tassy will continue to change lives. I understand why you do these things. I guess I'm finally used to it. But what I don't understand is how you talked Chris into this. I think I need to get to know him a little better. Or perhaps I already do. :) I did the same math for the last day and first thought I must have made a mistake. So here's what we'll do. Just like the buoy in the Pacific, do one one mile for each of the 75 Team Tassy family members starting today. That will take you to the end. I am praying that God lifts you and Chris above the sand and carries you to the end! Love you! Mom

Hey folks,

First, this is pretty effing hard.

I have so many things to say, and only 15 minutes on a weird tablet, so here’s the play by play. Apologies for grammar and spelling.

-Chris is great. Its awesome having a partner that laughs at your jokes all day.  I’m not that funny.

-There are only a half dozen or so Americans, and the stereotypes of the other nationalities are hilarious.  During the shakedown where they inspected our gear, I overheard an Italian guy talking about the 5 different types of cheeses he brought.  Having so many people from different places is one of my favourite parts of the experience so far. There is a dude from Brazil who is blind.  He and a partner are running it together, and crushing it.

-Toda I came in 59th place out 185.  Ai have no idea if that will happen tomorrow, so in the event I crash and burn, I iwanted to write it down so one day I can prove it to my grandkids Some of the training has paid off.

-there are no words for the pain.  I started yesterday at about mile 12, and im fairly certsin it will be with me for the remainder of 2014.  It is wild how difficult this is. It starts in my toenails (losing two), and goes straight through to my shoulders.  My hair hurts. Chris and I have decided a spa day is in order. It’s on you Viv.

-on that note, as difficult as it is, its even more beautiful.  Today, around mile 43, there was one person within maybe 3 miles of me and I could see nearly seven miles ahead.  There aren’t many places I’ve been where you can feel so utterly small and alone.  It is in those moments when the pain and aloneness creep in, that I think of every single one of the people that have donated so far to what were doing here.  Every step, every ache in a muscle I didn’t know I had is for you, and for every one of the people we serve.

I wish I could write more, but I have to go. There is a polish dude waiting I’m pretty sure already beat Chris up once.  I’ll try and write tomorrow.   This is a painful, beautiful, crazy experience, and rest assured, each one of you is here with  us. Reaching this goal is truly getting us through this.

Ian,There comes a point in a father’s life, that he realizes that all of the things he had hoped for his son would not only come true but manifest themselves into helping others. You have pushed way over the top in taking on your goals and making them happen. I could not be prouder!!! I can’t honestly appreciate the stress on your body; 128 miles at Philmont was a walk in the park compared to this. Our discussions on the word “tenacity” have always been based on the ability to outlast even your own aspirations. You exude the word. I’m sure your questioning all of this about now. Why? How stupid could I be? Am I just crazy? All the things that I would say while backpacking. You have also had ample time (16 hrs. 38 min. to be exact)to think about all of the times you thought about quitting, in races, in life’s relationships, in business. You dig deep within your soul and pull up your pain blinders and run on through to the next thought, in your case, the families your helping, the people in your organization and quickly realize “it’s not the destination. It’s all about the trip”. Your challenges will get greater in the next 2 days, and your pain will get worse. What won’t change is the fire in your gut to stick to the basics of success, one painful foot in front of the other. Think about this; it's only 406,560 feet till it’s over. Or, in your case, that’s 112,933 strides of left right left right!!! God has blessed you with the ability to see the end through the difficult spots. Keep the vision that’s so in your heart, in your sights. DAD

You 2 are such an inspiration! After having double knee replacement surgery, I whine when I face more than 5 steps to go up (or down) or have to walk "the whole way" to the back of the grocery store to get milk! Your strength and very large hearts will carry you through to the end of this incredible feat/journey. I'm so amazed by all you do for others. Godspeed, young man, Godspeed.

Ian, you'll probably get this on Tuesday. Guess. What. Day. It. Is. Huuummmmpppp Daaaayyy! Quite literally. Who would have guessed. After today. You'll be over the hump and halfway. Remember when I wanted to quit on the Chilkoot at Sheep Camp. And you said, "look, ma. You're halfway. It will take just as long to go back as it will to go forward so you might as well go forward. Never go back. I'll help you." So you woke up early the next morning, the day we would reach the summit and took my pack, ran up 4000 feet over boulders the size of volkswagens, then ran back down to get me. And you were with me every step till we reached the top of that mountain. Part way up, you told me to stop, turn around and look where I was, where I had been and where I was going. We sat on one of those Volkswagen sized boulders some 3000 feet up and saw the Alaskan sky with the moon on one side and the sun on the other and you said, "isn't this awesome." Well, Ian. Isn't THIS awesome? Go forward, never back. Keep an eye on where you're going, stop to take it all in every 10 miles or so. And know that I am with you with every step. Sending all my best before you embark on this crazy journey! Just a few tips for running with Chris Murrer: 1. He will tell stories the whole time. He will repeat the same stories. Be sure to cut him off when he begins a repeat or it won't end. 2. If he does by chance stop talking and things get awkwardly quiet, do not try and fill the silence. This means he's not in a happy nor good place. Silence works better than trying to fill the void. 3. He's a shuffler. 4. Always, laugh at his jokes. Always. God speed you crazy and tall man!!!!!!

Ian, I did Sahara Egypt 2010 and Atacama 2012. I will be cheering you on from the US! Pack as small and light as possible. Gaiters are a must in the sand! Good luck and have fun!
