153 miles in the can. 56 miles yesterday. 3.5 miles to go to the finish line at Petra, 2 very smelly, very torn up, very ecstatic (we’re hugging a lot) American runners, exactly zero baby wipes left, and from the sounds of it, over 43000 dollars raised so far for the cause we came here for.
It’s been A pretty Unbelievable 24 hours.
We started out yesterday by dropping several hundred feet into a canyon straight out of Indiana Jones. And then we stayed there for about a marathon. Gnarly. The kind of slot canyon where you can reach out and touch both sides with your hands sometimes. The type of place you wouldn’t want to be when the rain comes. And the kind of place that even the volunteers had camel in water for the checkpoints (yep. Camel is a verb here) Of the 185 runners, the canyon did it in for several, who have been nursing heat or foot injuries all week and just couldn’t keep going. Then, we climbed over 2100 feet to the ridge that would lead us to Petra. By the time we reached the top, the sun had gown down, and we lumbered into Checkpoint 5 in pretty bad shape. One guy we came into 5 with had a seizure shortly after we left (we stay at each checkpoint long enough to fill our water bottles) and limped into the finish line with one of the doctors this morning at 1130, a full 26 hours after he’d started. By stage 6, we’d been running for almost 12 hours, and spent the next 5 moving across the side of the Jordanian mountains in weather one might describe as Biblical. I had been running with a 40 something Filipino from my tent named Arthur who cant be more than 150 pounds. We had to keep checking to make sure he hadn’t been blown clear off the mountain. I sprained my left ankle (I’ve got a serious cankle) someplace between between CP 6 and 7, and the last 18 miles were pretty gruelling. We hit the outskirts of the village of Petra at about midnight, ran 4 miles through the streets, and then finished the night with a rock field straight down the mountain to the entrance of Petra canyon, crossing the stage 5 finish line with a lot of tears and more than a few swear words at 1:35AM. I checked into checkpoint 1 at 100, and finished the day 69th, which is where Chris and I have been sitting all week. Chris had a monster day. The Ironman finished the day 38th, and even though we didn’t get the chance to race together yesterday, we had a quick handshake and a hug before we collapsed in the tent and passed out until just a little bit ago. I’m proud of him. He said of all the races he’s done, yesterday’s course was the hardest he’d ever seen.
This is my first long race, but it won’t be my last (sorry Mom) and I can see, despite the ridiculous pain and dirt and emotions, why they are so addicting. In addition to the incredible people you meet from all over the globe who have done too many amazing things to count (this race has an Olympian, North and South Pole reachers, and Everest marathoners) it’s the 56 mile days that stretch your body and your spirit in a way unlike anything else I have ever done. It’s touching a limit that reminds you that we can push ourselves further than we ever thought possible, and that absolutely nothing is impossible together. It’s reaching the top of a mountain after a 2 hour climb with new friends utterly exhausted with another 7 hours to go, looking west across the holy land as the sun sets in the desert, imagining home and Haiti thousands of miles after that and feeling that, despite the distance, you’ve never felt closer to both.
When I train in Haiti, everybody always yells after me “Who are you running from?!”. Until tonight and this week and your incredible comments, vibes, and donations, I’ve never had an answer. But when I get back to Port-au-Prince to put the hard earned dollars of every one of our donors to work, now I know what I’ll say.
I’m not running from anybody.
I’m running to you.
Tomorrow, it’s the finish line.
Ian

I just got stretched by a small Chinese man, I’m the last guy in the cyber tent, and Chris just told me I run like Sasquatch. You’ll note by the tone in his post tonight that he is a mean soul. I’m doing all I can with the kid, but he doesn’t like old people and he hates puppies. What am I supposed to do with that?
In truth, he’s the reason I’m going to make it through this. I am sure there are people that are sick of us, because all we do is laugh like school girls.
We wake up tomorrow and run 56 miles. I don’t like driving 56 miles. But ill get up at 6, powder my feet and change the tape on my toes, put my pack on, dip Chris in his usual full body sunscreen bath (the kid gets sunburn under his socks), and put one Bigfoot in front of the other for 16-18 hours and get this thing done. Everybody seems nervous tonight. The folks who’ve done it before say to take it slow, keep eating, and when the sun goes down put as many clothes on as you can and don’t stop. They give us the option of stopping for few hours to sleep, but really, everybody just wants to get it over with. Then, its off day, and 5k home to the finish line.
Since we’ll be running tomorrow night, we wont post, but if you have a spare good vibe, anytime between 1am and 10pm EST we’ll be moving, so feel free to send it our way. I think we’re both nervous, but there isn’t any doubt in each of our minds, we’ll make it tomorrow if we have to crawl.
Thanks for all the blog comments. HUGE for us in the tough moments and even bigger for tomorrow. They mean a lot. Viv, tell Verline, Carmitha, and Marc Noel that theyre awesome, and we’ll tell them all about it in a few weeks in Haiti. To family and friends, youre all effing great.
Ok, time for bed. Big day tomorrow.
Here’s to what’s possible

I cant tell you how much the blog comments mean to us. We’re three marathons in, I’ve lost 4 toenails, and I can’t get Chris to put any clothes on. I think Chris has figured out how to respond to comments, but I’m generally pretty delirious by the end of the day and cant figure it out, so sorry I havent been able to say anything back. It really does buoy our spirits though, and we’ve got some big days ahead, so thank you.
Just kidding about the Chris part by the way. The toenail thing is real though. The docs had to drill holes into my toes to let out the pressure. Gross, right? Looks like it might not be a flip flop summer.
All in all a good day. Chris and I haven’t been running together now for two days. We have different strides, so he tends to smoke me on the downhills and I do a bit better on the uphills, so we generally play a big game of leapfrog all day. Highlights, other than the general good looks and charisma of my running partner:
The scenery is still incredible. We’re out of the Wadi Rum desert now, and today passed through a two mile salt flat with, wait for it, a camel racing track. I was about 5 minutes behind a guy who actually watched a camel being born, which is just absurd, because all this time Chris and I were convinced that they were all audioanimatromic robots. Theyre everywhere. Baby camels are obscenely cute, even if I only had a few seconds to catch a glimpse.
Camp is awesome. Our tent is full of great folks, all of whom have done races like this before. Its pretty humbling to be the rookies. A lot of these folks have run over 150 miles in places like Antarctica, the north pole, and Mt.Everest. One of our tent mates tore her Achilles heel yesterday after being one of the top females, which crushed all of us. Its incredible how our spirits rise and fall together. It really is one of the best parts of the experience. After each day, we cross the finish line, we all collapse out side the tent and talk through the day together. The tents are all bedouin style and sleep maybe 25 folks, separated into groups of 8 each, so we get some time together. Naturlly chris and I spend good deal of time being giant pains in the ass, which, as the only Americans seems to fit the bill.
One more marathon tomorrow, then, it’s the big day, which everybody seems to be nervous about. We did the math today, and figured that is we keep up our same pace and starting at the normal 8am, we should get in shortly after 2 am on Friday morning. In addition to being the longest stage, its also the most difficult, so we’ve got that going for us. Over 2000 feet of vertical climb and 56 miles. Chris and I will take turns carrying each other.
Apologies for the grammar and spelling, if you saw where I was typing from youd understand. Tiny tablet (big fingers) in a Bedouin tent, with sand for a floor, next to guy who smells not unlike and Brazilian Chris Murrer after 68 miles and no shower.
Keep raising that money, and please tell friends and family to not be afraid to comment. Even though I cant respond to them, they get us through.
For all the Tassys,

Hey folks,
First, this is pretty effing hard.
I have so many things to say, and only 15 minutes on a weird tablet, so here’s the play by play. Apologies for grammar and spelling.
-Chris is great. Its awesome having a partner that laughs at your jokes all day. I’m not that funny.
-There are only a half dozen or so Americans, and the stereotypes of the other nationalities are hilarious. During the shakedown where they inspected our gear, I overheard an Italian guy talking about the 5 different types of cheeses he brought. Having so many people from different places is one of my favourite parts of the experience so far. There is a dude from Brazil who is blind. He and a partner are running it together, and crushing it.
-Toda I came in 59th place out 185. Ai have no idea if that will happen tomorrow, so in the event I crash and burn, I iwanted to write it down so one day I can prove it to my grandkids Some of the training has paid off.
-there are no words for the pain. I started yesterday at about mile 12, and im fairly certsin it will be with me for the remainder of 2014. It is wild how difficult this is. It starts in my toenails (losing two), and goes straight through to my shoulders. My hair hurts. Chris and I have decided a spa day is in order. It’s on you Viv.
-on that note, as difficult as it is, its even more beautiful. Today, around mile 43, there was one person within maybe 3 miles of me and I could see nearly seven miles ahead. There aren’t many places I’ve been where you can feel so utterly small and alone. It is in those moments when the pain and aloneness creep in, that I think of every single one of the people that have donated so far to what were doing here. Every step, every ache in a muscle I didn’t know I had is for you, and for every one of the people we serve.
I wish I could write more, but I have to go. There is a polish dude waiting I’m pretty sure already beat Chris up once. I’ll try and write tomorrow. This is a painful, beautiful, crazy experience, and rest assured, each one of you is here with us. Reaching this goal is truly getting us through this.
Thanks for caring so much. Here’s to what’s possible together
From the desert,
Ian
