Dear All

Not got the energy to say much. Long March done and dusted, but at a cost. I really have nothing left in the gas tank. Easily the toughest Long Stage of any of the races I have done previously. A really tough day. Very happy to have completed the event. Tomorrow’s stage is ceremonial and not timed. We will be plodding along about 5km to finish in front of the Treasury.

Now looking forward to a shower, a bath and a cold coke. Might even treat myself to a cold beer or two.

Thank you all for your messages of support.

I will post more details on Facebook in a few days.

See you all soon

Simon

Thanks everyone for the messages of support, I really appreciate them. It’s great to receive so many messages from former racers – Gary, Stan, Sophie, Lucy and all. Thank you so much.

Yesterday was a really tough day at the office. We seemed to spend a great deal of time crossing really soft sand, and it was a real challenge. I got some pretty bad blisters on my left foot, and not wishing to gross everyone out, when i returned to camp and took my shoe off, my sock was blood red! On the positive side, the scenery is truly breathtaking. There are some amazing rock formations and vistas. The atmosphere around camp is positive and uplifting. Now that the rain has gone, everyone is smiling.

Today felt surprisingly good. I have found a way to shuffle along that seems to avoid pressure on the hotspots Very happy with the progress I made today.

We are now well over half way, and really just have the Long Day to go. The strategy for me is going to be very simple. Keep my head down and just watch the check points tick by.

Thanks again for all your support. I look forward to reporting my progress Friday afternoon.

Best wishes to you all

Simon

Well my week has just gone from bad to worse. Was about to have a hot shower before going to bed but the gas wouldn't ignite and I had to use the guest room bathroom instead. Luckily the old stiff upper lip was on hand and I managed to carry on as if nothing had happened. 'What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger' is my motto and it is getting through times like this that realy shapes your character.

Dear ALL

Thank you so much for the messages of support. Please keep them coming its great to have something to read after a day running across the desert.

Stage #1 was a toughie! The weather was shocking! Cold and wet! Fortunately the going was good so I was able to keep the kilometres ticking over. It didn’t help that we all got soaked the night before so all our race kit was dripping. Night 2 was totally miserable, a real low point. The temperatures were frigid, the winds strong, and the rain constant. Our bedoin tents leaked like sieves so we all got soaked yet again. It was a real struggle to get ready in the morning. Kit wet and sand everywhere in the tent! On the positive side, I have some great tent mates and the banter is fantastic. Real boost for personal morale.

Today’s stage was just under 40 km. The sun came out and the rain clouds disappeared from view. The weather was bright and sunny – perfect! Morale throughout the camp site improved instantly. The going was tough at times today. Lots of soft sand which slows you down and tires out the legs. Happy to finish the stage in just over 5.5 hours, which was slightly slower that yesterday, but given the terrain, I am happy.

I am doing my best to keep everyone entertained and am carrying a pack of trivial pursuit questions!

So far no blisters! A few mild aches and pains but that’s not surprising after 80km.

Looking forward to by dehydrated spag boll!

No more rain is forecast, so although its going to be cold – everyone should be happy tonight!

Thanks to you all – the plod to petra continues!!!

Simon. Make sure to hang that laundry out at the next camp - your clients don't tend to like their "clean" laundry returned to them musty, damp and rank. Ironed, on hangars and a touch of starch should be fine! Keep on trucking mate. Just think of JB trudging it out when the going gets tough and you'll find that extra gear! On on!

Hi Simon, Your doing great. I remember some cold and wet days in Gobi and how miserable we felt and how amazing it felt to feel the warmth of the sun again. Keep pushing!!!! great to hear you are keeping the morale of everyone else yo. cant believe you are lugging around trivial pursuit questions....Nutter lol. Theres a few extra grams in those. Please make sure you dump them as you finish them. Will be following your progress closely. Sure you will have a fantastic last couple of stages buddy. Good luck. Colin

Finally understood the problems with running on sand you must be dealing with daily out there. Accidentally put my foot into the kitty litter on the way out the door and almost fell over. A strong cup of tea and a sympathetic neighbour has helped with the shock but I feel your pain brother.

Not sure which is worse Simon, running that in the almost summer heat or what you are running in. I'll go for the almost summer heat. I'll go out and shovel the drive now, only a dump of 4 feet of snow! Keep running, all the best buddy.

Nice work Simon, keep it up. Although as BJ says, his stubbed toe puts into context some of your so-called suffering on this, your 6th luxury holiday in a far flung place. Whats the story about you changing from Chopstick Copper to Chinese Laundry?? Best of luck for Day 3!

Funny how extreme adversity focuses the mind. I was lying on the sofa elevating my injured foot when the old enigma of the chicken and egg came to mind. Afer much deliberation I decided to go with roast chicken over Spanish omelette for dinner but for a while there it could have gone either way. Oh the agony of choice.

A short poem I have modified, dedicated to the 191 participants taking part in 2014 Sahara / Jordan race: - To all the brave runners And weekend warriors Armed with strong hearts, and unwavering determination The trail-blazers, and the unsung heroes To all the men and women Who lay themselves on the line To do battle with extreme terrain, and harsh climates To bring home the scars, and the glory To the never-ending stages across barren sands And the mighty climbs up mountain-sides To the frigid star lit skies And blazing dawns To the blistered feet, and burning shoulders To all the muscles that refuse to surrender To all 191 of you You are giants You are heroes And I salute you. Good luck!!

Hi Simon keep up the pace mate. Go harder earlier and get through first 25k and ease pace off..you know the drill. no sense running in the sun. Man up! (i remember you wrote that msg to John Warren when we did the Gobi...we laughed then called you all names under the sun as we were both hurting bad from injuries. Worked though!) How are the feet and tent mates? Caught up with Janine yet? Have a great race ...lots of shouts from Sai Kung..come on son

Well, the sand is slipping quickly through the hour glass! Not long to go and until I will be heading out to yet another Desert. I am rally looking forward to the '2014 Sahara / Jordan' Race. Petra is a bucket list location for me, a place I have wanted to visit since I was a child. I was unable to participate in the Roaming Race there a few years ago as I was getting married! So I am really 'psyched' to be heading there now. I have this mental image in my head of running the last few kilometers through the Sig (Crescent Canyons') to the finish line! This will be my 5th Desert Race, and by now the nerves should be gone. However, I feel a lot less prepared for this one. A combination of a crazy working schedule and sickness have really limited the amount of training I have been able to do. I haven't spent any where as much time as I should have on my feet, so think this race more than any of the previous ones is going to be about 'mind over matter'. One of the highlights for me of these events is the people you meet and the sense of camaraderie around the campsite. I am really looking forward to swapping stories and getting to know some new 'Desert Runners'. There are also a few familiar names of the competitor list, so it will be great to catch up with Old Friends. I am less looking forward to the daily chores of eating dehydrated foods and managing blisters and aching limbs. But then it can't all be roses! That's enough rambling for today. More blogs to follow!
