Hi all. Made it!! Not the time I was looking for, but came in at 15 hours, position 36 for the long day. Not sure where that places me overall, but I think cutting off almost 6 hours off Gobi time exceeded my expectations.

First 20km we ran through a massive gorge/canyon, had to wade through water, which just added to the toenail issue. Then through a very rocky section where inevitably, my knee finally caved and I took the first of 2 tumbles. Sean literally picked me up from the side of the road in section 4 and I hobbled along with him for 3 sections. Must have been a sight to see – he also has knee problems. Section 6 I then started bringing up, and diarrhea, so it was not too pleasant. At that stage I was battling with my head asking me what was I doing here, 6 toes trying to burst their way through the front of my shoes, my knee struggling to support my now very lean 67ish kg frame, and my stomach not feeling to good. Fortunately the thought of the frosty tomorrow won and I pushed through.

Thanks everyone for the messages, much appreciated.

Love to all, andy.

Fab effort, well done. Must say it all sounds most unnecessary to me, much easier to stay at home and read the blogs. Enjoy the run in to Petra and the beers. Shazza

Well done !!!! Stage 5 seemed very tough from all the other blogs I've read. You've done an amazing time, so you are placed 33rd after today. Just ahead of the other SA lady. Enjoy tomorrow and can't wait to hear from you. Tel David - he is the comedian blogger for the Sahara

Hi all, thanks to everyone for the comments, much appreciated. Completed day 4, it was tough going today, but came through with only 4 toenails looking like they want to fall off soon. Getting prepared for the long day tomorrow. Weather looks ok, getting much hotter. The mood in the tent has improved dramatically now that the weather has turned.

The terrain today was pretty mixed, rocky at stages but largely soft sand (not good on the knee). Still very beautiful though. At least I am making sure to take the time to stop every so often and have a look around, even if it is to look for the pink flags marking the course.

Came in 24th today, so sort of keeping that position, but tomorrow is going to be tough, 86km. we are on the down slope now though, looking forward to the finish and a frosty or 3.

Love to all, and will blog again after the long one tomorrow.

Hopefully you maintain your 24th position in the long march and are only a few klm's away from a well earned nice cold beverage - 8 x 8 perhaps? No doubt you are enjoying the warmer weather but keep in mind that Tokyo has had over 20 cms of snow in the past week, not much fun! look forward to the final blog after tomorrow's last stage - at least your cricket team is fairing slightly better this test ...

Rooey actually not really that sick - think they were more concerned with catching what he had, hence he has had a nice half day at home. Sharon and I will think of you while we enjoy our foot massage tnight ! Lots of luv !

Apologies for the tardy response. Only just seen the blog against your name and gutted that I've missed valuable sledging opportunities!! Apart from that what great times you're putting together. Hope the kit still fits unlike those ropey old suits. Good luck on the long one. Shazza

Thanks everyone for the messages, much appreciated. Well, last night was sooo much better, with great weather, managed to sleep well. I have been improving each day, first day came in 28th, then 26th and today came in 25th, with a faster time by about 15 minutes. Today was quite tough, because it was a lot of running, sandy and one section through the salt plains.

Almost half way now, and so far everything holding up ok. I think I will lose at least 4 nails again, but I don’t want to open my taped feet until after tomorrows run.

The scenery today was again quite spectacular. Check the photos on the web site.

Matt, so glad to hear about the sharks, sorry about the bulls, but we know who the better team is.

Landie thanks for the email, we got the messages late because the weather was so bad they couldn’t set the cybertent up.

Well, looking forward to tomorrow, another 40km, but seems pretty ordinary day before the long day which is 86km.

Love to all, looking forward to a cold beverage and a decent bed.

Good to hear your knees, toes and other body parts are holding together. Hopefully you've remembered to pack your white sleeves and belt to help you through the long day ahead! Keep up the pace you'll be having the cool frosty beer passing your lips in no time!

Magnificent effort mate, you've got those miles ticking over nicely. The Egyptian cotton sheets, down duvets and slumberland mattresses at the next camp will prepare you nicely for the long day, not to mention the braaaai they will have fired up! Keep it up you Beast of Magnificence!

Jeez Andy, you are on fire...those bionic knees are humming. Also, toe-nails are way overrated - just keep going. Top 15 is well within your reach! Look forward to the war stories over a bottle(s) of good red when you get back. Cheers, Lourens

Your current overall ranking on the results page suggest you are in 24th place, seems you are doing better than you aware of. Great going and good luck with the second half as well as with the de-plastering of the toes.

Wow! What a start to the race. Pouring rain, freezing weather, but still an amazing place. The terrain, rock formations are just amazing. The race itself has been ok for me so far, my knee is painful but holding up (with a little help from medication).

Our first night in the tent was pretty awful, freezing cold and a very leaky tent. But it just got worse on night 2. I used my ground mattress to channel away the water, but slept in a very wet sleeping bag. Survived, and put in a decent day 2. Tomorrow is meant to be a tough day, so I will likely take it a little easier.

Our tent is great, many of the same tent members as Gobi, and generally quite fast. We are one of the fastest tents each day. Also one of the loudest – always joking and laughing even in what was a very miserable first two nights.

Have not seen any blogs yet, so hopefully this will get you all started. Matt how did the water polo go on Saturday? Look forward to hearing from you. If you read Davids blog, you will likely get a little more colour!!

You are flying !!! Please remember to bring the same meds with to Madagascar that you were taking on day 3. They posted results for stg 2 and 3 last night, so it was great to see that you are doing so well. Hopefully the rain will stay away and you can at least get a good nights rest in before the really big one tomorrow, day 5. All of us thinking of you ! Love u lots !

Andy, well done on day 1 (I think you are now on day 3, but results only up for day 1). Glad to hear spirits are high and wish I was with Tent 14 reunited! Can\'t believe tents have failed AGAIN - really no excuse. But glad to hear scenery amazing. Keep it up - best wishes to all the tent! Jo

Go you Beast of Magnificence! Great effort on Day 1 & 2. Likelihood of you going easy on Day 3 is zero so enjoy upping the self-medication! I think you need to spend more time with Dg - his eulogising about camels and Peter O'Toole is worrying - delusional after Day 2 is fast! On On and keep it up, doing great!

Yip, maybe you didn't see any blogs because you need to blog first then others can comment ? Communications don't seem to be coming through - they only posted the results of stg 1 now - after 10 on Tuesday HK time. You are really clocking in some good times though !!! It looks extremely rocky, so don't know how you are even managing to run at all. Just don't injure the other knee, so stadig oor die klippe ! All good here - Liam went to his first soccer session at FC and loved it. Will get Ronan to blog you later. Everyone in SA also sending emails of support, but will let them know they can blog now. Love from everyone,

Hey dad, looks like you are doing well, and you will be very happy to know that the sharks absolutely smashed the Bulls, 31-16. We won in waterpolo 11-7, and it looks like we might lose this weekend. Looks like your raining curse followed you into the desert, which really means that you have a curse... Really sounds like a good race so far, makes me want to do it with you in a couple of years. Hope the next day goes well and good luck!

Fantastic result following day 1. From your comments it seems day 2 went equally well - we can't see positions and times for day 2 yet. Hopefully the rest of the race is dryer - it should be, it's a desert after all. Keep it up!
